June 19, 2010

Release of Custom Addressbook version 6.0.
Free upgrade to all registered users.
New features:

Install/uninstall
* Added: an automatic uninstaller icon to the Custom Addressbook program group (only visible after using install.exe or addressbooksw_install.exe).
* Added: an entry inside the Windows control panel (category 'add remove programs') which can activate the automatic Custom Addressbook uninstaller. Please note that this control panel entry is only visible after previously having used install.exe or addressbooksw_install.exe to install the program.

Compatibility
* Improved: both the installer and the program itself are now compatible with all available DEP settings in Windows 7, XP and Vista. DEP = Data Execution Prevention and can be found in the Windows control panel.

Startup
* Added: a 'Quick start' dialog which gives you the opportunity to:
(1) Open a recent file (from a list of recently opened files)
(2) Open a file from disk (browse for the file)
(3) Create a new file
(4) Do none of the above.
This dialog also has an option 'Show this dialog the next time Custom Addressbook starts' which is available in the settings screen as well (see below).

License
* Added: the first time you start Custom Addressbook it asks you to read and officially accept the EULA or 'end user license agreement'.

Manual: compatibility and portability
* Improved: Custom Addressbook no longer needs the manual to reside inside the program directory (when it finds the manual there it will still use it though). This change is necessary because Windows 7 and Vista by default do not allow users to copy files manually into 'program files' and its subdirectories.
* Added: a new 'Install manual' dialog. When you try to open the manual from inside Custom Addressbook and it cannot find the manual, this dialog will be activated. It assists you in downloading the manual and copying it to its new location (by default this is in 'Application data').
* Moved: "Menu: Help/Manual" has been moved to Menu: Help/Manual/Open.
* Moved: "Menu: Help/Online manual" has been moved to "Menu: Help/Manual/Open online manual".
* Portability feature maintained: if you are able to copy the manual into the program directory, then Custom Addressbook will use it. The fact that Custom Addressbook still accesses the manual when it is found inside its program directory is especially useful for portability purposes. For instance, you can copy both the program and the manual into a directory on your USB stick.
* Added: "Menu: Help/Manual/Update". This menu item is only available when the manual is installed outside the program directory. When you click on this menu item, a dialog will appear which is very similar to the 'Install manual' dialog described above. The 'Update manual' dialog assists you in downloading and installing a new version of the manual.
* Visibility of "Menu: Help/Manual/Update". If the manual resides inside the Custom Addressbook program directory, then this menu item is not visible: Custom Addressbook expects you to manually copy the new version of the manual into its program directory.

Settings
* Moved: the settings screen no longer contains functions to define categories, define attributes and alter the database properties (name of the database and the number of attributes in an item title). These functions have moved to separate screens (as also mentioned below).
* Updated: the settings screen has been updated with a dual-pane view. The left-hand pane allows you to browse to one of the available groups: Clipboard, Display, New file, Phone, Settings, Startup, Shutdown. The right-hand pane contains options belonging to the selected group.
* Added: you can customize the "Menu: File/New" function in the group 'New file'. By default, when you create a new file in Custom Addressbook, it will contain some sample items. You can now also specify that a new file will be empty (except for the categories).
* Added: an option to show (or not show) the Custom Addressbook 'Quick start' dialog. Group: Startup.
* Added: options to ask whether or not to load the last accessed file upon startup, automatically load the last used file on startup, or 'do not load any file at startup'. Group: Startup.
* Added: Custom Addressbook can automatically save changes upon program exit, or ask whether or not to save the changes. Group 'Shutdown'.

Attributes
* Added: a separate dialog for creating, editing and deleting attributes. It can be accessed through "Menu: Define/Attributes".

Categories
* Added: a separate dialog for creating, editing and deleting categories. It can be accessed through "Menu: Define/Categories".

File
* Improved: the 'File save' toolbar button and 'File save' menu are now only enabled when changes are not saved to harddisk (and disabled in any other case).
* Renamed: "Menu: File/File properties" has been renamed to "Menu: File/File statistics".

File properties
* Added: a separate dialog to alter the file properties (the file title and the number of attributes in an item title). "Menu: Define/File properties".

September 26, 2007

Release of version 5.1
Free upgrade to all registered users.
New features:

Portability and Registration
* Added: when running the program from a USB drive on a non-registered computer, the program still shows the registration screen, but now the registration screen is pre-loaded with your registration number (from the text file "cabreg.txt" which is created after entering your registration number once). In other words, when running the program from USB drive on an unregistered computer you will no longer have to (1) open a file containing the registration number in a separate program, (2) select it, and (3) copy/paste it into the registration screen. All that is now done automatically.

Portability and Settings
* Added: it is now possible to store settings in an .ini file (the file 'cab.ini' in the addressbook program directory) or in the Windows registry (default). See the tab 'General' in the settings screen.
* Added: when Custom Addressbook detects that an ini file is present it will ignore the registry and load/store settings exclusively from/to the ini file. And when no ini file is present, Addressbook will access the registry instead.

Main window
* Added: the full path to open file now shows in statusbar.
* Added: a button to the toolbar to check for updates.

Themes
* Improved: the 'Aqua' theme now shows more clearly which category is selected (the selected category has been made to appear darker).

This last option is effective for fields of type 'phone'.

The caption of an item, by default is the value of the first attribute in the right pane, usually the name of the person. In the settings screen, tab 'general' you can specify how many attributes are part of the caption of an item. The default value is '1', leading to a caption of e.g. 'Bill Gates' (only the name attribute). However, if you choose '2', then the caption of the item will comprise of the first two attributes, e.g. 'Bill Gates, Microsoft' (the name of the person, and the name of the company). The maximum amount of attributes being part of an item caption is 4, the minimum amount is 1. Custom Addressbook will adjust the caption automatically if you leave one or more attribute fields blank.
